Guwahati News Desk: Northeast’s only cashless fair, Jonbeel Mela started at Jagiroad in Morigaon district from Thursday and will continue till January 23.
The three-day annual indigenous Tiwa community fair still follows the barter system and is held at the weekend of Magh Bihu.
People here exchange items instead of selling them.
The Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal scheduled to attend the event and distribute the Rajbhatta to 18 traditional Rajas on a concluding day.
The fair is organised since the 15th century under the aid of the Gobha kingdom. The titular Gobha king supervises the arrangements for the fair and conducts a ‘durbar’ on the concluding day of the event.
