World Environment Day 2021: Assam introduces Raimona as 6th national park

Guwahati News Desk: The Raimona National Park has been added among the five existing national parks in Assam on Saturday.

The announcement was made by the Chief Minister of Assam Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on the occasion of World Environment Day at Gandhi Mandap in Guwahati.

CM Dr Sarma says in the new addition, Assam has six national parks as the officials were undergoing to convert Dehing Patkai Wildlife sanctuary into a national park.

The Raimona National Park falls under Kokrajhar district which is a part of contiguous forest covering an area of 422 sq km covering the northern part of notified Ripu Reserve Forest of 508.62 sq ft.

The boundary of the new Raimona National Park starts from Sonkosh River on the west along the inter-state boundary of West Bengal and Assam from Indo-Bhutan border upto fire line Ride-6 southwards and Saralbhanga river on the east. It runs northwards till touches the Indo-Bhutan international boundary on the north and the remaining part of Ripu Reserve Forest.

The southern boundary runs eastwards along the fire line Ride-up 6 upto Pekua river where it runs at 90 degree southwards till it meets the fire line Ride-3.

The new national park shares contiguous forest patches of Phipsoo Wildlife Sanctuary and Jigme Singye Wangchuk National Park in Bhutan.

The Raimona National Park attract tourists of both countries as its has shared boundaries opening up huge opportunities for ecotourism.
